MiriATE® improves quality at an IPTV STB Manufacturer
A large STB manufacturer, with development activity split across several sites, was looking for a solution to improve product quality and to reduce the time to market for new product. By deploying a MiriATE system to each site, they have been able to increase the quantity of testing and to ensure a consistent quality of testing. The manufacturer’s significant investment in existing bespoke test tools and environment was not lost, as MiriATE’s standards-based, document interfaces allowed straight forward integration to maximise the capabilities for the resulting test environment. It is now economically viable for the manufacturer to run a more rigorous level of regression testing across all product releases. Testing is efficiently managed, as any of the MiriATE systems can be accessed and managed remotely. The test and engineering team now spend less time performing repetitive tests and more time fixing problems.
MiriATE improves testing efficiency for an IPTV Network Operator
A large IPTV operator was experiencing significant difficulties in efficiently testing the full scope of their service offering in a consistent manner. In particular, it was difficult or them to simulate real customer usage patterns across the entire scope of the service, or to comprehensively test each software release. With several hundred thousand customers, any service fault could result in high call volumes to the Customer Service call centre. The operator has deployed a MiriATE system, which is run 24 hours a day. The system is used to execute scripted functional tests of the the STBs and services delivered through them. MiriATE has proved particularly useful for endurance and stress testing – executing high numbers of VOD purchases, channel changes and other representative tests, in addition to random input testing. When MiriATE was first deployed, it identified a known problem which had been repeatedly reported by customers for more than a year, but could not be traced. MiriATE executed random input testing on multiple STBs and managed to reproduce the problem on two STBs with 48 hours. As MiriMON® logs the exact sequence of inputs that created the fault, it could be reproduced, investigated and fixed. The Network Operator estimated that the reduction in Call Centre traffic from this bug fix alone was sufficient to justify purchasing the MiriATE system.
MiriATE reduces time-to-market for a Satellite TV Broadcaster
A major satellite broadcaster was looking to automate its service validation process so as to significantly reduce the time to market for new services. On seeing MiriATE at a trade show they were immediately impressed by its capabilities, and particularly excited that MiriATE actually simulated consumer behaviour during testing of STBs and services – providing true black box testing. MiriATE drives the STB through its remote control interface (like a consumer), and observes the actual video output (like a consumer). However, MiriATE executes these black box tests faster, more reliably, more consistently and without getting bored or tired. The Broadcaster has successfully automated many acceptance and regression tests for its set-top boxes and services. The resulting increase the volume and quality of testing has helped the Broadcaster deliver better quality services, in a shorter time, to its customers.
