Making the case for automated testing

.

Approval tick that was testing successfulAs broadcast ecosystems become ever more complex, the traditional testing approach of sitting humans in front of an STB with a screen, a remote control and an ever-expanding list of tests is becoming less practical, less effective and more expensive.

The job is boring, repetitive and time-consuming, the quality of the test results is variable and ultimately means that products are late to market and less reliable than they should be.

This is turn leads to brand-damage, risk of churn, and at the very least, fresh bug fix software releases which themselves need to be comprehensively tested.

Everyone in the ecosystem is balancing the fact that they know they should do more testing, against the resources available.

From manual to automated

Automated testing helps resolve these issues. It provides a platform to allow more testing, more quickly, to get a more reliable product to market earlier.

Automating the testing of multiple STBs and IDTVs simultaneously on a 24×7 basis massively increases test capacity. This makes rigorous testing of every product release (including on legacy platforms) cost-effective literally overnight. It allows human testers to focus on the intellectual challenge of how to test more effectively, without having to do the mundane testing themselves.

Automated test scripts

With MiriATE, scripts are created using the open-source scripting language TCL, and created within a GUI environment, meaning that tests can be written by testers rather than programmers.

Every test executed is accompanied by a detailed report, showing exactly how the test device responded, giving a full audit trail for future reference.

Access to the system, scripts, reports, tests execution etc. is all from a standard browser, meaning that it is easy to give remote office/home access if required.

Roll-out of test automation

Several networks have already evaluated and taken MiriATE as an essential element of their move to test automation.

MiriATE has been chosen by the likes of Telenor, DTG, Sony, Ziggo, BT, Amino, TopUp TV and Airties to help improve their testing capability.
